Mr. Duclos,
I understand that you will be announcing changes to the federal government’s COVID-19 restrictions on international travel next week, and the CBC (Canada’s most reputable and objective broadcaster) has reported that testing of fully vaccinated people may be dropped as part of these changes. I am writing to you to request that your government drop all COVID-19 measures in relation to international travel, for the simple reason that they have not been proven to work and come at an extremely high societal (and constitutional) cost.
As you are aware, under Section 6 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, every citizen of Canada has the right to enter, remain in and leave Canada. As you are also aware, Section 6 is not subject to the “notwithstanding” clause in the Charter (Mr. Trudeau’s favourite clause, as it would appear). Any restriction on travel by the government must be reasonable, and of the least restrictive means possible. As we know, restricting the unvaccinated from traveling is completely unjustified, as the vast majority of COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations have been found in the “vaccinated” over the past few months. Indeed, cases and hospitalizations have continued to increase since these travel mandates were enacted, which prima facie proves that they have been wholly ineffective. We also know that there are much less restrictive means (rapid tests, etc.) to confirm that healthy, asymptomatic people are not bioweapons and are therefore worthy of constitutional protections. Your leader’s recent slurs describing anyone who is opposed to vaccine mandates have made it clear that the prohibition on unvaccinated people traveling was never about public health, but rather to punish and coerce the non-compliant.
Dr. Tam recently changed course on her COVID-19 recommendations in a February 4, 2022 videoconference, which you attended. As you will recall, she stated that all existing public health policies, including vaccine passports, need to be re-examined, with an understanding that Canada must start living with this virus in a “sustainable way”. She also admitted that the COVID-19 vaccines are ineffective against the current Omicron variant and, indeed, as the virus mutates, one would expect the vaccine to become less and less effective, unless her name was Bonnie Henry. And, the WHO, which has ostensibly been guiding Canada’s response to the current pandemic, has never recommended restricting travel, nor requiring proof of vaccination for such travel. The WHO reiterated this statement as recently as January 19, 2022. Now, as the weather warms up and flu season ends, any statistician or virologist (and maybe even a globalist or two) would predict a decrease in COVID-19 cases and hospitalization such that the illegal restrictions must be removed immediately, never to return.
As you are aware, several lawsuits have been launched against the federal government for these extreme and illegal violations of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Rather than wasting millions of dollars of taxpayer funds to defend a position that is indefensible, either scientifically, legally or ethically, I implore you to do the right thing and end these laws now. My Canada (and, I hope yours, too) is based on the premise that all citizens are equal in the eyes of the law, and all have bodily autonomy to individually decide which medical treatments they wish to accept without coercion. Out of the many people who I know that are vaccinated, none received this treatment because they were scared of a virus, but many received it so they could travel, and “get back to normal”.
Speaking on a personal level, I have not been able to fly to visit my elderly parents, and my healthy daughter has not been able to visit her biological mother in another province for several months now due to Mr. Trudeau’s provincial travel mandates. I have been prevented from flying to Mexico to consult with my doctor for follow-up treatment. My husband was not able to fly home to say goodbye to his dying father, nor to attend his funeral. The toll that travel mandates, both federal and provincial, have taken on families is immense. People are missing births, deaths, funerals and other significant life events (not to mention their Charter-guaranteed rights to seek medical care and earn a living) with absolutely no rational basis for such deprivation. As you are aware, Canada has the honour (?) of being the only country in the developed world that has banned the unvaccinated from air travel, and there are many reasons that no other countries have followed its lead. I would hope that Canada can recognize that it jumped the gun with adopting these draconian travel mandates and can now pivot to emulate Sweden, Japan, Norway, Denmark, the UK and other countries that have realized that, vaccines or no vaccines, it is time to get back to normal.
Thank you for doing what is right for all of the Canadians whom you have pledged to represent, regardless of their medical status.
